Nebuliser Masks and Mouthpieces
A mask or mouthpiece fits on top of the nebuliser bowl so the medication vapour can be breathed in from the bowl.
Mask versus mouthpiece Children under the age of 5 should use a mask, otherwise a mouthpiece is recommended. It is best to use a mouthpiece when nebulising Atrovent or steroids as these drugs can damage your eyes. If you use a mask with Atrovent or steroids protect your eyes (eg. wear swimming goggles) and wipe your face with a flannel after use.
Tips for use • If using a mouthpiece, place the mouthpiece in your mouth and seal your lips firmly around it. Breathe normally through your mouth • If using a mask, place the mask over the mouth and nose and secure the elastic straps over your head to create a tight seal. Breathe normally through your mouth. • Wash mask/mouthpiece after each use to prevent a build up of medication and to reduce bacteria growth. Leave to air dry and store in an airtight container. • Replace regularly as per manufacturer’s instructions.
