Asthma Friendly Schools Program
An initiative of the Asthma Foundations Australia
Did you know that one in nine Australian children has asthma and is the most common reason for hospital admissions in children under 12?
Asthma is the leading cause of school absenteeism.
The aim of the Asthma Friendly Schools program is to improve the quality of life, health outcomes and well being for school children with asthma.
The program is managed through the Asthma Foundations in all states and territories of Australia. In South Australia, it is run by the Asthma Foundation of SA.

Currently in South Australia 43% of schools are recognised as ‘asthma friendly’. These statistics are accurate as at 13 January 2012.
Asthma Emergency Kits
To obtain reliever medication for Asthma Emergency Kits please call the Asthma Foundation of SA on 8238 9300. Your school will need to provide evidence that staff are up-to-date with and have attended a 1 hour asthma training session provided by an authorized trainer for the Asthma Foundation of SA (this includes BELS First Aid courses). Your school will be issued with an ‘Authority to Purchase’ card that will enable you to purchase the reliever medication at your local pharmacy.

NEW Teaching Resources Available!
The Environment Protection Authority through AirWatch and the Asthma Foundation of South Australia have joined forces to provide schools with exciting new teaching resources. These learning opportunities link environment and health concepts to give students a better understanding of the relationship between air quality and asthma.
