Spirometry Workshop (1-day)
This course has been endorsed by the Royal College of Nursing Australia for 7 CNE points
This workshop aims to provide health professionals with the practical skills to accurately perform and interpret spirometry. On completion of this workshop, participants will understand the role of spirometry in the diagnosis and assessment of lung conditions, and be able to classify abnormal ventilatory function. The workshop is conducted by Associate Professor Alan Crockett, Director of the Primary Care Respiratory Research Unit at the University of Adelaide. The workshop is limited to 12 participants, ensuring the day is highly practical and interactive. Participants are encouraged to bring their own spirometer to maximise transference of skill.

• Role of spirometry in diagnosis and assessment of lung conditions
• Technique for performing spirometry
• Contraindications
• Interpretation of results; flow volume loops and spirograms
• Infection control
• Performance standards
• Calibration and quality control

Associate Professor Alan Crockett
Associate Professor Alan Crockett is the Director of the Primary Care Respiratory Unit, within the Department of General Practice, University of Adelaide. Alan has published in the areas of basic and clinical respiratory physiological techniques, home oxygen therapy and the establishment of normal values for Australia. He is on the Evaluation Committee for the National Guidelines for the Management of COPD, and is nationally and internationally recognised for his expertise in spirometry.
Dr Kerry Hancock
Dr Hancock is a General Practitioner with a special interest in respiratory disorders. She is Chair of the National Asthma Council GP Asthma Group, Chair of the Australian Lung Foundation GP Advisory Group and longstading member of the Asthma Foundation SA Medical and Scientific Committee.
