Asthma is a serious condition and is recognised as one of the top 6 health priorities in Australia. Over 2 million Australians have asthma including 1 in 9 children and 1 in 10 adults. Asthma is one of Australia’s most widespread chronic (long-term and persistent) health problems.
Australia workplaces are impacted directly by this disorder and in particular by poorly controlled or poorly managed asthma. Factors of concern for employers are:
• Absenteeism related to individual employees
• Absenteeism of parents caring for children with asthma
• Lowered productivity due to lost sleep
• Incidences of work aggravated asthma
• Incidences of occupational asthma
Employers can create a safer work environment by training their staff to manage an asthma emergency.

“An employee had an asthma attack in one of our stores, which made us very apprehensive about it happening again. That’s when we made a commitment to having two people trained at each and every store. The asthma training is in addition to their Senior First Aid Certificate and has given them the reassurance and extra confidence they need to deal with an asthma attack” – HR Manager |
