Live Well with Allergy and Anaphylaxis - Information Sessions

The Asthma Foundation of South Australia and Anaphylaxis Australia have joined forces to create this new and informative session on allergy. ‘Live Well with Allergy and Anaphylaxis’ is a two hour session designed to provide the person with allergy/anaphylaxis or their carer with an update on current management.

The program includes:

  • Introduction to allergy (asthma, hayfever and eczema)
  • Identifying allergies
  • Avoiding common allergens
  • General management
  • Anaphylaxis:
    - What it is
    - How to treat it
    - Avoiding allergens (food, insect)
    - Use of an Epipen

The session allows for discussion and problem solving and is designed to increase the confidence of grandparents, parents and others who look after children with allergy/anaphylaxis.

Allergy and Anaphylaxis in Australia
Allergy is on the increase, not only in Australia, but throughout the world. In Australia and New Zealand approximately:

  •  1 in 3 people develop allergies at some time during life
  • 1 in 5 will develop atopic dermatitis
  • 1 in 6 will have an attack of hives (urticaria)
  • 1 in 20 will develop food allergy
  • 1 in 100 will have a life-threatening allergy known as anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis affects 5-8% of children and 1% of adults. Symptoms include:

  • All over rash
  • Swelling of tongue or throat
  • Trouble breathing
  • Gut cramps
  • Diahorrea
  • Vomiting
  • Shock (drop in blood pressure)

Effective management of allergy includes diagnosis by an allergist, identification of possible reactions and appropriate treatment. Avoidance of allergens is the key to reducing the effect from allergy and improving the quality of life for those living with allergy.
